Zesty Michelada

Cheers and Happy Father’s day to my dad, who simply called it beer and clam.  Little did I know as a youth that his afternoon summertime drink actually had a name.  The Michelada is a Mexican cocktail with many variations, and while I’m no expert in this area, I do know you’ll love this Zesty Michelada with Clamato juice and spice just as my own father enjoyed his “beer and clam”.

Although a little spicy and salty, the Zesty Michelada is quite thirst quenching and goes down easy on a hot day.  For those who aren’t familiar with the original Clamato juice, it’s basically a blend of tomato juice, spices and clam juice.  You may think clam juice and beer is an odd combination, and I suppose it kinda is. Yet the clam gives it a bit of brininess that makes it perfectly “slurpable” over a chili spiced salted rim.

Don’t forget about the garnish either!  It’s a cocktail that can balance all you can through at it.  I personally like shrimp and celery but go on and try chunks of spicy sausage, cherry tomatoes and or lime.  I think a little wedge of cheese could also work.  There’s no rules and that’s the fun of it, so enjoy!

      Instructions
      1. In a flat shallow dish combine salt, chili powder and lime zest. Cut one wedge out of the whole lime and run along the rim of 4 tall beer glasses to wet the edge. Dip each glass rim into salt to rim the edge. Set aside.
      2. Measure Clamato juice into a 2 cup liquid measure and add lime juice from remaining lime, hot sauce, Maggie seasoning and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine. Fill the salt rimmed glasses 1/3 full of ice and pour Clamato mixture equally between glasses and top with beer. Garnish as desired and serve immediately.

      Consider yourself warned!  Raspberry Vodka Lemonade is dangerously delicious and perfectly refreshing on a hot summer day.  The recipe makes a pitcher full, so be sure to invite your friends.

      A stirring spoon and pitcher is all you need for this super quick and easy beverage.  Using frozen lemonade concentrate allows you to use the empty can as the measuring device, so there’s little cleanup too. Don’t let the summer go by without stirring up a batch of this lovely fruity drink, it’s sure to be a favourite.  Enjoy!

          This spicy and fruity cocktail originates from a wonderful weekend in Banff, AB, Canada.  It was a weekend spent with great friends, stunning scenery and good food. Dinner at the Park Distillery was filled with laughs, flambéed food and the purchase of a bottle of their signature Chili Vodka.  Along with the bottle of vodka came a recipe card for The Sawback and I’ve had it squirreled away for just over a year because it’s perfect for Cinco De Mayo.  A spicy cocktail made with the aforementioned Chili vodka, pineapple juice and lime juice.  It has just the right amount of heat that makes you want to take another sip to cool the mouth with the refreshing pineapple juice, only to be caught in a sipping circle that‘s hard to stop.  Don’t forget that chili vodka is also great to use in your favourite Caesar cocktail, Spicy Grilled Vodka Shrimp and perhaps a little spicy vodka penne. Enjoy!

              Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a Celtic Twilight. A boozy, creamy cocktail mixed with not one, but two Irish delights. Irish whiskey, or should I say “water of life” and Bailey’s Irish cream come together with Frangelico for a punch.  The creaminess smooths out the drink and makes it go down easy. It’s a little tribute to all that is Irish on their celebration day. As luck of the Irish would have it, St. Patrick’s Day falls on a weekend this year, giving drink goers something to celebrate. Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

                  This year I’m smitten, not because of a new romance, but because I’ve had the pleasure to love the same man for more than 20 years. With this kind of time comes an understanding of moods, fleeting kisses, cuddles, and the contentment to spend the evening watching television. Little is expected in the way of fancy gifts and expensive roses on Valentine’s Day, it’s a cozy meal and quality time together that means the most to us. And while we would normally reach for a bottle of wine, this year we celebrate our time together with a fruity and flirty Raspberry Rum Punch.

                  The vibrant colour and fruity taste makes it a delightful cocktail to sip and enjoy with your sweetheart. In fact, it’s even better with your long time love because it’s out of the comfort zone. Something new and refreshing! A slightly fizzy cocktail to “cheers” each other, with a love that is signified with the comfort found in one another. The fact that this cocktail is vibrant with raspberry flavour and rather delicious doesn’t hurt either. It might just mean we’ll have to have two. Happy Valentine’s Day!

                      Raspberry Sauce
                      1. In a small sauce pan over medium heat stir together all ingredients and allow to cook down, mashing berries as it does, approximately 2-3 minutes. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and strain through a fine mesh sieve, pushing on the solids to extract the juice. Can be made ahead, covered and refrigerated until ready to use. Yields approximately 3 ounces.
                      Cocktail
                      1. Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice. Add rum, Grand Marnier, raspberry syrup and a generous squeeze of lime juice. Shake until cold, about 30 seconds. Divide equally between two cocktail glasses and top up each with an approximate ounce of soda. Serve immediately.
